Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) In The Qur’ān

The Qur’ān is a large book in Arabic, a foreign language for most people in the world. For that reason, few people have an accurate understanding of all the different subjects covered in the Qur’ān. One of the most important subjects in it concerns the different prophets God has sent into the world at different times. One of those of whom the Qur’ān says a great deal, of course, is Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Most people have heard a great deal about his teachings and life. However, few have an accurate knowledge of the many and varied ways he is described in the Qur’ān. For that reason, this study was prepared.

This short essay is intended to give the reader a clearer picture of how Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is described in the Qur’ān. What follows are simply verses dealing with different aspects of his life and work taken directly from the English translation of the Qur’ān. Several verses are usually given under each topic so as to give the reader a more complete picture of that topic. To gain the best understanding of how he is described in the Qur’ān ; however, we would encourage all interested readers to obtain a translation of the Qur’ān in their mother tongue and read it for themselves.

A Messenger (رَّسُول Rasul)

Whatever of good befalleth thee (O man) it is from Allah, and whatever of ill befalleth thee it is from thyself. We have sent thee (Muhammad) as a messenger unto mankind and Allah is sufficient as Witness.” (Al-Nisa’ 4:79)

“And Muhammad is no more than a messenger; the messengers have already passed away before him; if then he dies or is killed will you turn back upon your heels? And whoever turns back upon his heels, he will by no means do harm to Allah in the least and Allah will reward the grateful.” (Al-‘Imran 3:144)

“. . . Say: “Glory to my Lord! Am I aught but a man,- a messenger?” (Al-‘Isra 17:93)

“Muhammad is the messenger of Allah . . .” (Al-Fath 48:29)

A Messenger’s Responsibility

“The duty of the messenger is only to convey (the message). Allah knoweth what ye proclaim and what ye hide.” (Al-Ma’ida 5:99)

“Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn back, then on him rests that which is imposed on him and on you rests that which is imposed on you; and if you obey him, you are on the right way; and nothing rests on the Messenger but clear delivering (of the message).” (Al-Nur 24:54)

“And the idolaters say: Had Allah willed, we had not worshipped aught beside Him, we and our fathers, nor had we forbidden aught without (command from) Him. Even so did those before them. Are the messengers charged with aught save plain conveyance (of the message)?” (Al-Nahl 16:35)

“But if ye deny, then nations have denied before you. The messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.” (Al-‘Ankabut 29:18)

“But if they turn aside, We have not sent you as a watcher over them; on you is only to deliver (the message)…” (Al-Shura 42:48)

A Reminder

“Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.” (Al-Ghashiya 88:21)

A Man

“Say: I am only a mortal like you; it is revealed to me that your god is one Allah, therefore whoever hopes to meet his Lord, he should do good deeds, and not join any one in the service of his Lord.” (Al-Kahf 18:110)

“Say: I am only a mortal like you; it is revealed to me that your Allah is one Allah, therefore follow the right way to Him and ask His forgiveness; and woe to the polytheists.” (Fussilat 41:6)

Sent to the Arabs

“And thus We have sent you among a nation before which other nations have passed away, that you might recite to them what We have revealed to you and (still) they deny the Beneficent Allah. Say: He is my Lord, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely and to Him is my return.” (Al-Ra‘d 13:30)

“The (Qur’ān) is indeed the message, for thee and for thy people; and soon shall ye (all) be brought to account.” (Al-Zukhruf 43:44)

“He it is Who raised among the inhabitants of Mecca a Messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His communications and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and the Wisdom, although they were before certainly in clear error.” (Al-Jumu‘a 62:2)

Sent to the Whole World

“And We have not sent you but to all the men as a bearer of good news and as a warner, but most men do not know.” (Saba’ 34:28)

Giver of Good News and a Warner

“That you shall not serve (any) but Allah; surely I am a warner for you from Him and a giver of good news.” (Hud 11:2)

“And with truth have We revealed it, and with truth did it come; and We have not sent you but as the giver of good news and as a warner.” (Al-Isra’ 17:105)

“Say: O people! I am only a plain warner to you.” (Al-Hajj 22:49)

“And to recite the Qur’ān. And whoso goeth right, goeth right only for (the good of) his own soul; and as for him who goeth astray – (Unto him) say: Lo! I am only a warner.” (Al-Naml 27:92)

“You are naught but a warner. Surely We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and a warner; and there is not a people but a warner has gone among them.” (Fatir 35:23-24)

“Say: I am only a warner, and there is no god but Allah, the One, the Subduer (of all).” (Sad 38:65)

“Surely We have sent you as a witness and as a bearer of good news and as a warner.” (Al-Fath 48:8)

“Therefore fly to Allah, surely I am a plain warner to you from Him.” (Al-Dhariyat 51:50)

“Say: “As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone: I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public.” (Al-Mulk 67:26)

Harm or Benefit over Others:

“Say: I do not control for myself any harm, or any benefit except what Allah pleases; every nation has a term; when their term comes, they shall not then remain behind for an hour, nor can they go before (their time).” (Hud 10:49

“And that I should recite the Qur’ān. Therefore whoever goes aright, he goes aright for his own soul, and whoever goes astray, then say: I am only one of the warners.” (Al-Naml 27:92)

“Surely We have revealed to you the Book with the truth for the sake of men; so whoever follows the right way, it is for his own soul and whoever errs, he errs only to its detriment; and you are not a custodian over them.” (Al-Zumar 39:41)

“But if they turn aside, We have not sent you as a watcher over them; on you is only to deliver (the message); and surely when We make man taste mercy from Us, he rejoices thereat; and if an evil afflicts them on account of what their hands have already done, then-surely man is ungrateful.” (Al-Shura 42:48)

“Say: Lo! I control not hurt nor benefit for you. Say: Lo! none can protect me from Allah, nor can I find any refuge beside Him. (Mine is) but conveyance (of the Truth) from Allah, and His messages; and whoso disobeyeth Allah and His messenger, lo! his is fire of hell, wherein such dwell for ever.” (Al-Jinn 72:21-23)

Knowledge of His Own Fate

Say: I am not the first of the messengers, and I do not know what will be done with me or with you: I do not follow anything but that which is revealed to me, and I am nothing but a plain warner.” (Al-Ahqaf 46:9)

Knowledge of the Unseen

“Say: I do not say to you, I have with me the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel; I do not follow aught save that which is revealed to me. Say: Are the blind and the seeing one alike? Do you not then reflect?” (Al-An‘am 6:50)

“Say: I do not control any benefit or harm for my own soul except as Allah please; and had I known the unseen I would have had much of good and no evil would have touched me; I am nothing but a warner and the giver of good news to a people who believe.” (Al-A‘raf 7:188)

Repentant towards God

“Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness of thy sin, and hymn the praise of thy Lord at fall of night and in the early hours.” (Ghafir 40:55)

“So know (O Muhammad) that there is no God save Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy sin and for believing men and believing women. Allah knoweth (both) your place of turmoil and your place of rest.” (Muhammad 47:19)

“Lo! We have given thee (O Muhammad) a signal victory, That Allah may forgive thee of thy sin that which is past and that which is to come, and may perfect His favour unto thee, and may guide thee on a right path.” (Al-Fath 48:1,2)

Responsibility for the Disobedient

“Is he on whom the word of doom is fulfilled (to be helped), and canst thou (O Muhammad) rescue him who is in the Fire?” (Al-Zumar 39:19)

Follows the Religion of the Prophet Abraham

“Then We revealed to you: Follow the faith of Ibrahim, the upright one, and he was not of the polytheists.” (Al-Nahl 16:123)

Commanded to Believe all the Books

And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit.” (Al-‘Ankabut 29:46)

Seal of the Prophets

“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; and Allah is ever Aware of all things.” (Al-Ahzab 33:40)

Regarding Intercession

“And guard yourselves against a day when no soul will in aught avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be received from it, nor will they be helped.” (Baqara 2:48)

“Ask forgiveness for them (O Muhammad), or ask not forgiveness for them; though thou ask forgiveness for them seventy times Allah will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (Tauba 9:80)
